Obama Will Consider Strikes In Syria Against Terror Group – Bloomberg

The president is unlikely to get a similar invitation from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who Obama has called on to step down and threatened with airstrikes. As weve done against al-Qaeda around the world, well take whatever action is necessary to protect our people, Rhodes said. U.S.

But expanding the airstrikes in Iraq and broadening them to include Syria could mean a lengthy American military commitment in the region that could consume much of Obama’s remaining time in office. “What we should have learned over the past dozen years in that part of the world is that the use of military power is very unpredictable,” said Stephen Walt, a professor of international affairs at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. That may be particularly true in Syria, where President Bashar Assad’s government is warring with opposition forces. Syria has a host of military players in close proximity to each other, including free the Islamic State, the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, mainstream Western-backed rebels and pro-government forces.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner were not immediately available for comment. Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, said on Friday: “The administration still hasnt put forward a plan for dealing with the wider threat posed” by the Islamic State. With members of Congress scattered throughout the country during the long summer break, it is difficult to gauge their sentiment for an expanded military campaign against the Islamic State. When Congress returns to Washington on Sept. 8 it will face a series of budget challenges, including whether to provide additional funds to deal with a surge of Central American youths trying to enter the United States illegally. Congress also will try to approve temporary funds to keep the government operating in the fiscal year that begins on Oct.
